Virunga National Park is home to about a quarter of the world’s critically endangered mountain gorillas. The area’s other two Great Ape species, the Eastern Lowland Grauer’s Gorilla and Chimpanzee, make Virunga the only park in the world to host three taxa of Great Apes.

Another prominent inhabitant is the Okapi, an endangered species that resembles a zebra but is more closely related to the giraffe. (Go ahead and Google it. We know you want to). In addition, large colonies of hippopotami, forest and savanna elephants, lions, and numerous rare bird species abound. But a visit to Virunga is not purely about spotting wildlife.

As one of the most biologically diverse protected areas on the planet, the park is a geological wonder - it contains two of the world’s most active volcanoes, and the world’s largest lava lake. During this expedition, you’ll visit the Rwanda Genocide Museum in Kigali, trek through Virunga National Park to see the mountain gorillas and climb to the edge of the Nyiragongo Volcano.

You’ll spend the night at the edge of the lava lake, visit the local gorillas in the orphanage, and stop by Lake Kivu. You’ll see the Congo in all its brilliance and beauty, and, like us, be changed forever by the animals that call the area home.

Trek to the top of one of the largest active volcanos   in   the world.

Sleep on the rim of the Volcano and experience the   largest lava lake on the planet,

Trek to see the mountain gorillas of Central Africa.
