HIGHLIGHTS

This marine phenomenon occurs from May through July, when billions of sardines – or, more specifically, the Southern African pilchard Sardinops Sagax – spawn in the cool waters of the Agulhas Bank and move northward along the east coast of South Africa. Their sheer numbers create a feeding frenzy along the coastline.

In terms of biomass, researchers estimate that the Sardine Run could rival East Africa's great wildebeest migration. The shoals are often more than 7 km long, 1.5 km wide and 30 metres deep, and are clearly visible from the surface or from spotter planes.

This extreme natural event attracts all kinds of marine life, which will give you the opportunity to witness a variety of species congregating for the feast.

These species include: Humpback Whales, Southern Right Whales, Bryde’s Whales, superpods of Common Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, thousands of sharks (Blacktips, Duskies, Bronze Whalers, Whites, Raggies, etc.), Pelagic gamefish such as King Mackerel (Cuda), Cobia, Kingfish, Bonito, and Tuna.

As for birds, it’s common to witness the Cape Gannet, Petrel and Skua, with the Tern representing the smaller species.

In short, immersing yourself in the Sardine Run is like nothing else you’ll ever experience.
